Description At the end of this activity, students should be able to:
– use a correlation chart for infra–red spectra
– indicate the most typical absorptions found in the spectra of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, amines, haloalkanes, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives (esters, amides, nitriles)
– identify the presence and absence of functional groups using infra–red spectra
– predict the infra–red absorption regions for molecules of known structure
– describe the uses and limitations of infra–red spectroscopy.
